Claude and MCP in Google Ads — What It's For
MCP is the standard that lets Claude safely connect to Google Ads data. Here's what that means in practice.

What the Model Context Protocol is
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that Anthropic — the company behind Claude — published in late 2024. It solves one specific problem: instead of writing a separate, custom integration for every tool an AI model needs to connect to, MCP gives you a shared, standardized way to plug language models into external data and systems.
In practice, this means Claude can "talk" to a specific tool — Google Ads, for example — through what's called an MCP server, which translates natural-language requests into the tool's actual API calls.
How this works in Google Ads
Google publishes its own official MCP server for the Google Ads API. It acts as a bridge between Claude and an ad account, exposing three tools:
- →A list of ad accounts the user has access to.
- →GAQL (Google Ads Query Language) queries for campaign metrics, budgets, and resource status.
- →Metadata describing the structure of Google Ads data.
That means you can ask Claude directly: "how many active campaigns do I have?" or "show me a spend report for the last 7 days broken down by device" — and get an answer without exporting a CSV, logging into the Google Ads interface, or assembling the report by hand.
What it doesn't do
One important caveat: Google's official server is read-only. It cannot modify bids, pause campaigns, or create new ads or ad groups — it's built for reporting and analysis, not account management. Third-party servers also exist that extend this with the ability to edit budgets or keywords, but that's a separate category of tool that needs careful vetting of who you're granting ad-account access to and on what terms.
Why this matters for a marketer
The biggest benefit is time: campaign data is available instantly, in natural language, without switching between a dashboard, a spreadsheet, and email. For agencies and marketing teams that report on campaign performance regularly, it's less manual work while keeping full control over who can actually change something in the account.
MCP is the foundation for broader use of AI in marketing — not just for Google Ads, but for any tool that publishes its own MCP server. This is just the start of that direction.
